Originally by: Disco Jack Others make no sense to be locked on a mac client, like copy/paste/cut and select all, are ALL covered already by command+c/v/x and a respectively, this means we could use ctrl+c/v/x/a for something completely different
No. It will not work.
The client is a windows program. It does not recognize cmd+c/v/x. What happens is that cider has now a feature that "aliases" some cmd+char combinations into ctr+char. The default setup (you can change it in the config file) is to do it for cmd-q/x/c/v. When you hit cmd-c the client actually sees a ctl-c. If it was possible to bind ctrl-c to something else than "copy", hitting cmd-c would trigger that something else.
Originally by: Disco Jack As it is, mac users now have 2 key-bindings for each of these commands, which is useless,
We have two key bindings because one of them is the one we are used to. cmd-char combos cannot be recognized by eve. They need to be "doubled" up to another combo that exists within windows.
Originally by: Disco Jack IÆm not saying that this is a show-stopping annoyance, but it does exemplify the fact that mac users are second-in-line for consideration.
No. It exemplifies the fact that the mac client is a windows client: cider partially implements windows apis by calling mac apis.
Originally by: Disco Jack -There isnÆt enough testing done for macs. Can you blame us for not volunteering? We are paying to play a game, and doing testing takes time away from when we could be playing our characters in the live server.
Not doing testing takes time away from being able to play after the expansion. So here's the option: a) spend time testing before the expansion and hope (no guarantee) that it's sufficient. b) suspend your subscription before the expansion and follow the forums. Do not restart it until the client is solid.
Originally by: Disco Jack Aside from the training time (which continues in our sleep I might add), we would be losing our real game-time to test a version that is expected to need refining.. which is just wrong considering we pay to play a game that should already be refined (but isnÆt).
Which color pill did you take? Good. Welcome to the real world! he mac problems are not the main problems of EvE. Think about those people that have a mothership, for example. They cannot even login because if they do it's 99% chance they loose billions. And think about practically none of the 0.0 sov mechanics working as intended, costing logistic nightmares and, for someone, possibly multiple billions in lost assets.
Originally by: Disco Jack Incentive to test, can go for mac users and windows (and any OS) users alike. -Reimbursement for time spent testing.
What about this: suspend all subscriptions and all training before patch release. By reactivating the subscription the player implicitly declares that the client is working for him and forfeits all whining and reimbursement requests. This is strong incentive for players to test and also for CCP to fix, else they get no $$.
But .. wait ... this is something players can already do! So maybe there's no need for CCP to change anything.

Originally by: Drake Draconis They don't use proper logging... they use some obscure pos windows logging crap in some hidden directory that most mac users don't have patience to locate.... as opposed to using Apple's Console logging system (or syslogd for that matter).
Under windows the optional logging is done with that program. Under Mac it's even easier and much less resource intensive than using syslogd: they log to stdout. Browse the knowledge base for the switches you need to pass to eve so that it logs to stdout and then redirect that to a file of your liking. That's what they told us to do to submit a crashlog.
Originally by: Drake Draconis IMHO they need to stop dinking around with the windows garbage and directX trash... and go mac native. It will be cleaner... better.. stronger.
Yep. But it'll take 5 years to develop and double up in the number of developers because they'd need to maintain two clients (unless you suggest they stop developing the windows client, which will simply not happen).
Originally by: Drake Draconis That or strip the cider engine out and go back to basics... the WINE users have an easier time... why is it so stupid over here?
Name a company that is going to actively support EvE on wine and guarantee a timely modification to wine so that it keeps up with whatever CCP does in the future, and that may happen (or maybe not). Sure some people are currently better with wine. But what if CCP changes some code and whine stops working (as it has happened in the past)? Who is gonna fix it?
